New Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Agricultural Markets in Hohenheim [11.07.23]
Dr. Lawrence Olusola Oparinde holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural and Resource Economics from the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria. He was at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, Germany, on a Split-site Ph.D. programme between 2016 and 2017. He has attended training and conferences in Tanzania, Israel, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Spain. He is a member of many professional associations, such as the International Institute of Fisheries Economics and Trade (IIFET) and the Nigerian Association of Agricultural Economists (NAAE). Dr. Oparinde is a recipient of many international grants and awards, such as the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation Grant, MASHAV Grant, Oregon State University Grant, Best Paper Award on Aquaculture Economics in Developing Countries, International Aquaculture Best Paper Award and European Association of Fisheries Economists Best Paper Award.
Currently, Dr. Oparinde is a Postdoctoral Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in the Department of Agricultural Markets, Institute of Agricultural Policy and Markets of this University. His research activities focus on the application of economic principles and econometric tools to examine sustainable agricultural production, value addition, and farmers’ welfare. In the course of his stay at the University of Hohenheim, he will be working on research topics that revolve around the analysis of value addition, cooperative membership, welfare, market participation, climate information and adaptation, and conflict issues among fisherfolks in the coastal region of Nigeria. He believes that his research outputs will give hints on how to solve the problem of poor fisherfolks` welfare, conflicts caused by natural resource distribution, and low adoption of climate change adaptation strategies. Dr. Oparinde is very optimistic that, together with Prof. Dr. Sebastian Hess and the team at the Institute of Agricultural Policy and Markets in Hohenheim, he will have his scholarship enhanced, skills improved, research outputs boosted, and horizons broadened. He equally wishes to explore the landscape of Stuttgart and Germany at large for familiarization purposes.
